episode 16 - Superboy 98

Hi guys! This episode features the first appearance of Ultra Boy! And the first appearance of Marla! this episode is pretty long for some reason!! I guess you could say it's ULTRA LONG.

Last week we guested on the very excellent podcast over at Major Spoilers. Me and Kristen got to talk and giggle excitedly on their Legion-themed episode, "We Are Legion!". (not to be confused with the title of adriana's sketchbook! nerd minds think alike).

Really fun! Might be seeing more of these crossovers in the future. Gardner, I'm looking at you with my internet eyes. It's only a matter of time before we conquer the internet.

The opening music usually has something to do with the content. You wouldn't believe how few songs there are with the word "ultra" in them. I ended up on Ok Go's "Invincible" instead, to save you from Kylie Minogue's "It's In Your Eyes".

Ultra-Boy's real power is to make that godawful costume look cool.

You should totally do him.
(with your gorgeous art, I mean).

Kristen and Adriana, you rock.

I'm fairly certain that Marla shows up as RJ Brande's assistant later on.

Also, I don't know about here, but in the Post-Zero Hour Legion Ultra Boy's weird green bird thing was his gang symbol.

(Is the Jo-Nah as an artist thing you were talking about the issue where the Time Trapper turns a bunch of them into students taught by Curt Swan in the 1950s? I love that issue!)

I can't wait till you review the comic where Superboy uses his X-Ray vision to find out if Lana is Insect Queen.
"Gasp.. either Lana is Insect Queen or she has traveled to the future and visited Victoria's Secret".

Thanks for the shout-out, kids.

Random thoughts:

Ultra Boy's costume is one of those things that shouldn't work, but does...

I remember the first time I read this thing, I hated Ultra Boy for trying to mess up Tom Welling's life.

I always figured that the chest symbol was a reference to the ultra-energy beast that ate him and gave him powers.

Why ARE these boys always trying to look through each other's clothes?

I bought a legion showcase to keep up with you guys from now on and I see what you mean about the ordering. They wanted 3 times what I spent on the showcase for one archive with less material!

I had the originals of all these issues! I am so happy to hear them reviewed. (I guess 'had' is the wrong word--I still have them just not where I'm living now. They're boxed and bagged at my brother's)\

Anyway, I learned about your site from the Major Spoilers Website--You have some really funny stuff here. Great work.

What did you guys think of L3W? I think they gave you guys a nodd when Tinya exclaimed "Adorable"

adriana said...

we are reading it and screaming happily at every page!!!!

I was amused that Lo3W demonstrated that Jo does, indeed, have ice breath. (It seems to be confirming a lot of Legion power speculations that I've seen around.)

Whoa, all of a sudden I was having flashbacks to this PSA. He even has the same grey hair.

My brother and I, always thought this is suppose to show how dumb Ultra-Boy is. I think the Legionnaires think Ultra-Boy has cool powers so they give him a simple question to let him join, "What's Superboy's secret identity?" Isn't that info in all the history books? Don't they have Smallville remade into a future historical spot in Superboy's honor. That's why I think they sent Marla with Ultra-Boy. To keep an eye on him. And Marla is dressed in an Ultra-Boy similar uniform so it won't confuse him.

Meanwhile the Legion is back home laughing it up.

Ok, I have to confess and apologize to you two. I listened to your first several episodes and really, intensely disliked them. I didn't get the feeling that you really enjoyed the Legion at all, but were just looking for an easy target. So I stopped listening, but the guys at "Legion of Substitute Podcasters" kept talking about how much fun your show was. So I listened to this episode -- and I have to admit, they're right. :-) I really enjoyed this review, and I thought, "You know what, if they didn't really love the Legion, they wouldn't be going to this much trouble or having nearly as much fun as they sound like they're having!"

So -- forgive me for being an uptight fanboy. You've won me over and I will be a faithful listener from here on out (as well as reading S.T.O.P. -- that looks incredible! You're uber-talented!)
