I don't think that's a ship holding Sunboy over the volcano, the edges of that disc look like it might be straw or just too frilly to be aerodynamic. I think it's a futuristic gaudy pinata holder.
Sunboy is is so retro, as you noted he has a radio/alarm clock but you didn't notice he still has books and therefore no Kindle.

Page 2 Panel 3: The mayor describes the statue as a 'giant metal statue'. I agree with Kate, Cos probably tipped it over, otherwise why wouldn't he save it?
With the monsters, the FIRE-BEAST ,the HYPNO-BEAST and the RADIATION-BLAST, if BLAST is actually a lettering error. If the L was an E then it would also read BEAST.
